Technology and its Relevance

Dear Parents,
Thank you for taking the time to look at my blog. I want to use this blog to discuss the use of technology in my classroom. this is also a way for me to get my ideas across to you and allowing feedback as well. Technology in the classroom has become essential for students and teachers. It is important that the classrooms today have computers, and these computers have appropriate software and abilities to research on the Internet. The PTA is trying to raise money to ensure that the students of this school get the appropriate measures to succeed and have the latest technology to help our students further their education.
I know many of you have concerns about the technology use in the classroom and think that it is a waste of time and its getting in the way of how students learn. I assure you that it is a necessary tool that captivates today's learners. Students now days learn completely differently then the past because they are exposed to technology their whole lives. Most students have internet at their homes, and even blog themselves.
Information today is only a click away, and when a teacher can do the same thing, students can learn even more. For example we were discussing oceans, and sea life in Science and instantly we had access to all the oceans, their appearences, and the depthness of them and the lives that live in them. WWW.Youtube.com/watch?v=_LDExXoFvvQ. This would be a great example of the processing theory and how we could further the lesson by showing the oceans in real time via the video on the screen.
We all remeber doing book reports growing up. Today we can even further that type of research and have the students prepare their own powerpoints for book reports they did. This would be a great way to allow students to make their project meaningful and explosive.
Another way for my students to interact with Science through technology is by virtually dissecting animals online. http:/?www.froguts.com/flash_content/index.html. this is an amazing site that would really connect the students with the things we cannot do in class.
Today our children are surrounded by technology. They text, email, chat, blog, and play games at the same time. Jerome Bruner believed in the discovery of learning. He felt that children were more likely to understand and remember concepts that they discover through their interaction with the enviroment(Robert & Doering, 2010). Therefore we must bring technology into the classroom. there is more insight on Jerome Bruner here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerome_Bruner.
I hope that this blog has been a helpful tool. Just like this blog, I want the technology in my class to ONLY be a tool for success. Sice our children learn differently then we do, it is imperaive that they get the chance to take it to the next level. Please contact the PTA and help us raise funds for better technology in the classroom.

Thank You,

Aaron Betschel
